Holi

Also known as the festival of colors, Holi is celebrated to mark the arrival of spring. People from all parts of India, irrespective of their religion, caste, or geographical location participate in this Hindu festival. This year Holi is on March 17. There is a legend associated with Holi. It is said that the word “Holi” is derived from the name of the fiend sister named “Holika” of the demon king Hiranyakashipu.
Over time, the king was blessed to be virtually immortal. He became blind to others needs, intoxicated by his special powers and demanded people to worship him as God. His own son, Prahlada, denied his command and continued to worship Lord Vishnu. The king made his son sit in his sister’s lap who sat on a fire-lit pyre. Holika had draped a cloak which made her safe from the fire. But, this trick couldn’t work. She got burned into ashes, while Prahlada sat untouched by the fire. This fire became symbol of the victory of good over evil. A day before Holi, a bonfire is lighted to commemorate this victory. The next day, people play Holi by smearing colors on each other and drenching family, friends, and neighbors with colored water.

Every year a number of tourists visit Italy to see the attractions especially in Rome, Milan, Venice, Naples, and Turin. Italy is the birthplace of remarkable people such as Dante Alighieri, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Leon Battista Alberti, Galileo Galilei, etc. These and a number of other reasons make Italy one of the top picked destinations. If you have read about or participated in Spain’s La Tomatina festival, you would also enjoy the Battle of Oranges.

Battle of Oranges

The Battle of the Oranges is held in Ivrea – the Northern Italian city. It is ranked as the largest food fight in Italy. The reason for the origin of this festival is unclear. It is believed that it started as a self-defiance act against the city’s despot who tried to rape a young girl on the eve of her marriage. The young woman beheaded him, and the people burned his palace. To commemorate this festival, nine teams contest by throwing oranges at each other. It is scheduled to be celebrated from March 2, 2014 to March 4, 2014.
